It is nearly two months now since Ricardo Quaresma arrived as a deadline day loan signing until the end of the season, a move the player says has rekindled his love for the game.

In that time we have seen a change of manager, a return to the Barclays Premier League title race and progression in Europe in what has been a busy period of fixtures. Now with some time between games to relax, Quaresma chatted with chelseafc.com to discuss how he is settling in.

An impressive hour-long debut against Hull City was followed by the dismissal of Luiz Felipe Scolari and the arrival of Guus Hiddink, under whom the 25-year-old has turned in a string of cameo appearances from the bench. It all makes for a strange couple of months, made easier by the presence of some familiar faces.

'It is always nice to meet fellow countrymen in a club when you go abroad because you know each other and speak the language together. Bosingwa has been very helpful because we have known each other from a very early age,' he explained.

'We were together in the youth categories in our clubs, he was at Boavista, I was at Sporting. Then we played together four years at Porto. He is a very funny guy and we spend a lot of time together. He is the person I spend most of my time with here. It is important for me to have all these people, so many here at Chelsea, who can speak my own language and help me.'

Compatriots have certainly helped him settle. So, seemingly, has the atmosphere of the group as a whole and the return of some much-needed confidence, lacking in his short time in Italy at parent club Inter.

'When I was at Inter I wasn't feeling very confident, I wasn't playing well and wasn't happy. I already feel more confident here at Chelsea, it has brought the joy back for me, which I didn't have at Inter.'

'I lost my will and motivation, and that is important for a footballer, to be happy, which I am now because I got my confidence back,' Quaresma continued. 'That's what makes me feel more confident and want to improve more and I don't have any fear, everything thrown at me I am fine with it.'

That said, it must have been a strange situation to find himself in when the man who signed him was no longer there a week later.

'Of course it was difficult, because things were not going well for me at Inter so I came over here and then faced this change,' he shrugs.

'In any case it is very difficult in this situation in a club, but for me it was a little more because I didn't know what was going to happen. I am very grateful that Mr. Scolari brought me here and gave me the opportunity to come to Chelsea. The club is still helping me now and I am still here. I am always going to be very grateful to Mr. Scolari for giving me the opportunity, but these things happen,' he admits.

'All the players have to do is respect the manager, whoever comes or goes, and keep doing our jobs.'

Under Hiddink, the side has been doing just that, with a strong run of form until Saturday's defeat at Tottenham. The standard of English football has greatly impressed Quaresma, who now has experience in four of Europe's top leagues, England added to Portugal, Italy and Spain.

'If we are going to speak about the differences we could be here all day long,' he warns us. 'Every championship and league in the world has its own mentality and way of playing.

'Everybody likes to play in the English league, I think this is because it's a very competitive league, players come here and learn a lot. They get stronger, physically and psychologically, they have to in order to play here, and you have to keep this level high.'

'Everybody wants to play here, it helps you improve and become stronger. This can only help in any other league you play in, and it gives more motivation because the rhythm is so frenetic, you have to be at your best.'

Since his arrival, progression into the last eight of the Champions League has also been secured. No more than an interested observer due to being cup-tied, Quaresma has been impressed with the English clubs involved.

'I believe it is normal when a league is stronger than the others you have most of the important teams in the Champions League, the most important competition for clubs,' he assesses.

'Obviously there are still four English teams in the competition, they take this very seriously. I believe the rhythm in this country is very high, very fast, and we other nations have to keep up with them. Most of the players in the league want the trophy so much that they play their best in these games.'

'It is very difficult to go to England and play in these clubs' homes because they are very competitive at home. This is a natural progression of the game because the league is so strong at the moment.'

With that in mind, it must be refreshing to have a fortnight without needing to focus on league action and take a break after an intense spell, albeit without those called up for international duty.

'It is a bit different because obviously with some players away on international duty it is quiet, but nevertheless we keep working hard because we have to keep going. Tomorrow we have a friendly game which is not important but for us but it is good because we just want to be playing football. And of course it helps with our conditioning and fitness for the very important games that are ahead.'

And what of his own international career, seemingly on hold after being left out of the last two Portugal squads?

'At the moment I am playing well, being given the opportunity to play and working hard, so I am keeping myself motivated,' Quaresma explains. 'Whenever the national team wants me they know where to find me and I will be in a nice condition.'

In questo periodo abbiamo visto un cambio di allenatore, un ritorno alla corsa per la Barclays Premier League e una progressione in Europa nella quale c'è stata un periodo pieno di incontri. Ora con un pò di tempo tra partite e relax, Quaresma ha parlato con Chelseafc.com e ha discusso su come si sia stabilito.
Un debutto di grande effetto durato un ora contro l'Hull City è stato seguito dall'esonero di Luiz Felipe Scolari e dall'arrivo di Guus Hiddink, sotto la cui guida il venticinquenne è apparso in campo diverse volte entrando dalla panchina. E' tutto accaduto in un curioso paio di mesi, vissuti più facilmente dalla presenza di qualche faccia familiare.

E' sempre piacevole incontrare connazionali quando vai all'estero poichè sai che è nessun altro parla la tua stessa lingua. Bosingwa è stato molto d'aiuto poichè ci conosciamo da quando eravamo molto giovani. Lui ha spiegato

Noi stavamo insieme nelle giovanili dei nostri club. Lui era al Boavista, Io allo Sporting. Dopo abbiamo giocato insieme per quattro anni al Porto. Lui è un tipo molto simpatico e passiamo molto tempo insieme. E' la persona con cui passo più tempo qui. E' importante per me avere tutte queste persone, così tante qui al Chelsea, che sanno parlare la mia stessa lingua e mi aiutano.

I connazionali lo hanno sicuramente aiutato a integrarsi. Così ,apparentemente, c'è l'atmosfera di gruppo e quella sicurezza di sè che era mancata nella sua breve esperienza in Italia.

Quando ero all'Inter io non mi sentivo sicuro di me, non giocavo bene e non ero felice. Già sono più sicuro di me qui al Chelsea. Mi è stata riportata quella gioia che non avevo all'Inter.

Avevo perso la mia determinazione e la mia motivazione, ed è importante per un calciatore essere felice, come sto adesso è dovuto al fatto che mi è tornata la fiducia in me stesso, Quaresma ha continuato. Questo è ciò che mi fa sentire più fiducioso e voglio migliorare e non ho nessuna paura.

Detto ciò, deve essere stata una situazione difficile, affinchè ritrovasse se stesso quando l'uomo che lo aveva ingaggiato è stato con lui per non più di una settimana.

Sicuramente è stato difficile , poichè le cose per me non sono andate bene all'Inter così sono venuto qui e ho affrontato questo cambiamento;

In ogni caso è molto difficile questa situazione in un club, ma per me lo è stato un pò di più poichè non sapevo cosa stesse per accadere. Io sono molto grato a Mr. Scolari mi ha portato qua e mi ha dato l'opportunità di venire al Chelsea. Il club adesso mi sta ancora aiutando e io sono ancora qui. Io sarò sempre grato a Mr Scolari per avermi dato questa opportunità, ma queste cose succedono; egli ha ammesso

Tutti i giocatori devono rispettare l'allenatore, chiunque venga o vada, e dobbiamo continuare a fare il nostro lavoro.

Lo standard del calcio inglese ha estremamente impressionato Quaresma che ora ha esperienze in quattro dei maggiori campionati Europei; l'esperienza inglese si aggiunge a quelle in Italia, Portogallo e Spagna.

A tutti piace giocare nel campionato Inglese, io pensa sia così poichè è un campionato molto competitivo, i giocatori vengono qui e imparano molto. Questi diventano più forti fisicamente e psicologicamente, essi lo devono fare per poter giocare qui e si deve continuare a giocare a questi alti livelli.

Tutti vogliono giocare qui, ciò ti aiutà a migliorare e a diventare più forte. I ritmi frenetici del calcio inglese ti spingono a cercare di diventare il migliore.

Per quanto riguarda la Champion's league sono contento che il Chelsea sia arrivato ai quarti di finale e credo che il ritmo frenetico delle squadre inglesi permetterà che queste difficilmente vengano eliminate.

Riguardo la sua carriera in nazionale a seguito della sua doppia esclusione nelle ultime due liste dei convocati stilate da Queiroz?

Al momento sto giocando bene, essendomi stata data l'opportunità di giocare e lavorare duramente, così io continuerò a motivarmi, Quaresma spiega. Ogni qual volta la nazionale mi vorrà, sanno dove trovarmi e io risponderò cordialmente.
